The vines are often grown on the hillsides, in terraced fields known as "restanques", or in theplains, sheltered by pine trees. The Provencal vineyards are primarily concentrated in the Bouches-du-Rhône and Var counties. Explore the region with your fine car from Car rental France.

There are several justly famous appellations, Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence, Coteaux des Baux,Coteaux Varois, Côtes de Provence, Bandol and Cassis. Each produces a wide range of wines withgreat aromatic diversity and strong accents. However, all share the very sunny character of the Mediterranean climate.

The mosaic of different soils and exposures produces crystal-clear rosés that are fruity andgenerous. Provencal rosé wines go beautifully with the hot summer days and lovely long evenings, served with an Aïoli, Anchoïade or other summer fare. The Provencal vineyards also produce outstanding reds that are powerful and full-bodied, which can age beautifully in your cellar.

A Côte de Provence red enhances wild boar, eggplant in tomato sauce, rack of lamb, the famoustian of courgettes, dishes full of sunshine and flavour. Grilled fish, Bouillabaisse and other Provencal seaside specialties call for a Coteaux Varois white, or a tender, delicate Cassis ….

The Southern Côtes du Rhône, from Orange to Avignon

The Côtes du Rhône vineyards are among the oldest vineyards in France, and have been recently reorganised. In the county of Vaucluse, Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Village wines are found on both sides of the Rhône River. The villages of Cairanne, Rasteau, Valréas, Beaumes de Venise are well-known for their wines and are waiting to be discovered during your car tour. Also deservedly famous are the towns of Roaix, Sablet, Séguret, Visan, Vacqueyras and Gigondas. On the left bank, the land opens onto the Aygues River valley and the Ouvèze River valley. The renowned chateauneuf du Pape red goes beautifully with venison and countless other dishes, and the elegant, fine chateauneuf du Pape blanc is exquisite with sautéed foie gras and truffles.

Regional wines appelations, all in the family

The Côtes du Luberon appellation encompasses long-standing vineyards planted on the sunny slopes of the Luberon range. The reds are fleshy, full and fruity. The Côtes du Luberon rosés stand among the great Provencal rosé wines, and have beautiful cherry colour. The Luberon whites are often very very pale, with glints of green.
